What is Geek Therapy?

Geek Therapy is the use of psychology of geek fandoms such as tabletop role playing games (TTRPG), anime, comics, superheroes, movies, video games, tv shows, science fiction, pop culture, and more to improve our everyday lives.

Some of us may feel like we have a raging green monster, full of rage that’s hard to contain, but we want to hold it in as much as possible. Others may find shelter in anime or manga relating to the sense of resilience you share with the characters. There are even those out there who feel our most authentic selves when playing a TTRPG, where we can safely express who we are.

Gather Your Strength Counseling in San Diego, CA uses Geek Therapy, along with other evidence-based theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing to address relational issues as well as symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and anxiety.

Keep in mind, many characters in these fandoms come to a point in their lives where they feel stuck, overwhelmed, and don’t know what to do, just like us.  Even the most powerful of heroes will reach out for help.  If they can do it, so can we.
